The Maestro
Conductor Michael Flamhaft is founding director of the Band of Long Island (“BOLI”). He is also an accomplished in-demand arranger with several published works to his credit. Conceived as a musical version of the Rotary Club, the Band of Long Island's mission is to help other not-for-proft organization raise money for their own worthy causes. Now in its 17th season, the Band of Long Island recently performed at the Conference of the Association of Concert Bands -- a conveted and prestigious invitation that has been extended twice to the band within the last decade -- and was told it "may very well be the best band to perform in the 26-year history of the Association"
A graduate of S.U.N.Y. Fredonia, he began conducting studies at Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. He continued his studies with Myron Levite of the Brooklyn Boropark "Y" and was the founding director of the Teachers Symphony of New York in 1975, and the first Great Neck Community Band in 1983. After earning his Masters Degree from L.I.U. and conducting studies there with Mark Dolliver, he started the 16 piece "Can Do" Music Teachers Big Band – appearing with them throughout the metropolitan area.
A proud Rotarian Michael resurrected the Great Neck Community Band which he conducts under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Great Neck. He lives in Great Neck and is happily married to Joan, his wife since December ‘66. They have two children, Jennifer, an actress in Los Angeles, married to Jack, a television executive, with grandchildren Jackson, Ava, & Eliza; and Matthew, a home improvement contractor/house builder in Stone Ridge, New York, married to Meredith, an Occupational Therapist, with grandchildren Magnolia and Maven.
