A New Conductor Takes the Podium
Meet Sarah Fernandez
Sarah Fernández, conductor, arranger, pianist, and clarinetist, has been named the new Conductor of the Band of Long Island (BOLI) (effective February 1st), succeeding its Founding Director, Michael Flamhaft, who has stepped down from the podium after more than 25 years.
In a statement about her appointment, Fernández said she was “Very pleased to be joining the BOLI community, and eager to engage all audiences in the exuberant sound of the wind band, as well as continue performing and supporting new music, diverse repertoire and living composers.”
Also Music and Artistic Director of the Manhattan Wind Ensemble, Sarah Fernández has conducted and performed in various wind bands throughout the Tristate area. A native Californian, she received her Bachelor’s degree at the University of the Pacific Conservatory in Stockton, CA, and a Master’s degree from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, both in Music Education. She teaches general music and is choral director in Valley Stream UFSD 30 on Long Island.
After more than 25 years on the podium, Maestro Michael Flamhaft, Founding Conductor of The Band of Long Island (BOLI), is stepping down. As he concluded his tenure Flamhaft said, “This Band belongs to the Long Island Community and it’s time for another conductor to pick up the baton and take the Band into the future. I’m very proud of what the Band has done to help charitable causes, and I’m most honored to have worked with excellent musicians that make up the Band of Long Island.”
